One pickup load = an 8-ft truck bed filled level, about 2.5 cubic yards. The 15-yard is the largest size that takes heavy debris. See all five roll-off sizes in the dumpster size guide.
What fits in a 15-yard dumpster?
A 15-yard dumpster fits about 6 pickup loads, enough for a packed two-car garage or a small roof tear-off. Typical 15-yard jobs include a garage cleanout, a single-layer roof on a small house, two bathroom remodels, or a larger concrete patio broken up and loaded to the halfway line.
These are typical examples, not promises. Breaking items down lets more fit.
- Two-car garage cleanout: shelving, old furniture, boxes and yard tools.
- Small roof tear-off: one layer of shingles on a small home. Check the shingle math on the roofing dumpster page.
- Two bathrooms: tubs, vanities, tile and drywall.
- Patio or driveway section: broken concrete, clean and filled halfway.
Garage cleanouts inside Abilene city limits: the City of Abilene says only its Solid Waste division may collect household trash in the city, with short-term construction debris as the one exception. We deliver cleanout dumpsters in towns outside city limits. Cleanout dumpster details

A 15-yard dumpster includes 2.5 tons, or 5,000 pounds. Weight over 2.5 tons is $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound from the landfill's digital scale ticket. Shingles and concrete are the loads most likely to go over in a 15-yard dumpster.
Worked example for a small-roof load:
- Gross weight minus tare weight = 5,200 lb of debris.
- 5,200 lb = 2.6 tons. Included: 2.5 tons.
- Over: 0.1 ton × $75 = $7.50.
Tare weight is the empty truck. Gross is the truck plus your load. Your invoice comes with the certified ticket 3 to 5 business days after pickup.
Roofers can estimate shingle weight before ordering with the calculator in the dumpster weight guide.
Will a 15-yard dumpster fit on your driveway?
A 15-yard dumpster needs a flat spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, which fits most standard driveways. The roll-off truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance, so check for low wires and tree limbs.
Drivers place wood boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt. Leave a few feet beside the dumpster so you can walk around it while loading. If the truck can't drop because the way is blocked, a $125 dry-run fee applies.

Should you get a 10-yard or a 20-yard instead?
Pick the 10-yard dumpster when the debris is heavy and small in volume. Pick the 20-yard dumpster when the debris is light but fills more than 6 pickup loads, like a kitchen gut. The 15-yard dumpster sits between them: more room than a 10-yard and still allowed for heavy debris.
| 10-yard | 15-yard | 20-yard | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside size | 12 × 8 × 3.5 ft | 16 × 7.5 × 4.5 ft | 22 × 8 × 4 ft |
| Pickup loads | About 4 | About 6 | About 8 |
| Weight included | 2 tons | 2.5 tons | 3 tons |
| Heavy debris | Allowed, halfway | Allowed, halfway | Not allowed |
Going too small means a swap, which is billed as another rental. Going one size too big costs only the difference between two base prices. See the 10-yard dumpster or the 20-yard dumpster.
What's not allowed in a 15-yard dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed in a 15-yard dumpster. Fridges, freezers and AC units with Freon cost $50 each, and so do mattresses and tires. Garage cleanouts often turn up paint cans and car batteries, so set those aside before loading.
Dried-out latex paint cans are different from wet paint; ask on the call if you are not sure. The full list of what can go in a dumpster covers each item.
15-yard dumpster questions
Will a two-car garage fit in a 15-yard dumpster?
A packed two-car garage usually fits a 15-yard dumpster when furniture is broken down. If the garage also holds a workshop's worth of lumber or old appliances, a 20-yard dumpster gives more room.
How many roofing squares fit in a 15-yard?
Weight sets the limit for shingles, not space. At 80 lb bundles and 3 bundles per square, one square weighs 240 lb, so 2.5 tons covers about 20 squares of one layer. Use your own bundle weight from the wrapper.
Is a 15-yard the biggest dumpster for concrete?
The 15-yard dumpster is the largest size we allow for concrete, dirt, brick and sand. Heavy debris goes only halfway up the walls, so larger slabs may need two hauls.
How high do I have to lift debris into a 15-yard?
The 15-yard dumpster walls stand about 4.5 feet tall. Most people can toss bags and boards over, and heavier items go in easiest from a step or ramp.
