What fits in a 30-yard dumpster?

A 30-yard dumpster fits about 12 pickup loads, sized for big construction and renovation work. Typical 30-yard jobs include a room addition, framing and drywall scrap from a new home, a full interior gut of a small house, or a two-layer roof tear-off where the weight is planned ahead.

Typical examples; your load depends on the debris mix:

  • Room addition: framing offcuts, sheathing, drywall, packaging and old siding.
  • New home build: scrap from one stage of work, swapped as it fills. See construction dumpster rental.
  • Whole-house interior gut: walls, flooring, cabinets and fixtures.
  • Large or two-layer roof: plan the weight with the shingle math below.

How many tons can you put in a 30-yard dumpster?

A 30-yard dumpster includes 4 tons, or 8,000 pounds. Weight above 4 tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket. Big roofs and plaster-heavy tear-outs are the loads that most often pass 4 tons in a 30-yard dumpster.

Worked example for a large tear-out:

  • Net debris on the ticket: 9,200 lb = 4.6 tons.
  • Included in the 30-yard: 4 tons.
  • Over: 0.6 tons × $75 = $45.

Roof check: 30 squares × 240 lb per square (80 lb bundles, 3 per square) = 7,200 lb, or 3.6 tons for one layer. Two layers would be about 7.2 tons, so plan two hauls or the overage.

Try it with your bundle weight in the dumpster weight guide.

Where does a 30-yard dumpster fit on a job site?

A 30-yard dumpster fits on a firm, flat spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, the same footprint as a 20-yard. The truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance, so keep the spot clear of power lines and tree limbs.

On a new build, set the drop zone before framing blocks the approach. On a driveway, drivers lay wood boards under the rails. Locked gates or parked equipment that block the drop trigger a $125 dry-run fee.

Do you need a 30-yard, or will a 20-yard do?

A 20-yard dumpster does the job when the debris is from one or two rooms. Choose the 30-yard dumpster when the job spans a whole house or a build stage, because the 6-foot walls hold about 4 more pickup loads and the rental includes 1 more ton.

If a job will outgrow the 30-yard, step up to the 40-yard dumpster, which holds about 12 to 16 pickup loads, or plan swaps: each swap is a new standard rental with its own 4 tons. Compare down with the 20-yard dumpster.

What isn't accepted in a 30-yard dumpster?

Concrete, dirt, brick and sand are not accepted in a 30-yard dumpster, because heavy debris goes only in the 10- and 15-yard sizes. Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not accepted in any size. Appliances with Freon, mattresses and tires cost $50 each.

On job sites, keep paint, solvents and adhesives out of the box. For demolition of older buildings, read the asbestos and lead-paint notes on the construction dumpster page. Full item list: what can go in a dumpster.

30-yard dumpster questions

Is a 30-yard dumpster too tall to load by hand?

The 30-yard walls are about 6 feet tall, so most crews load from a ramp, the rear door, or a second-story drop. For drops more than 20 feet outside the building wall, OSHA requires an enclosed chute.

How many 30-yard dumpsters does a new house need?

It depends on the build size and the trades. Most crews swap the 30-yard as each stage fills it. Call with your schedule and we'll plan swaps around it.

Can a 30-yard go on a residential driveway?

A 30-yard dumpster has the same footprint as a 20-yard, so it fits most two-car driveways that are 22 feet deep. The taller walls also need clear overhead space when the truck tips it off.

What's the overage on an overloaded 30-yard?

Overweight is $75 per ton over 4 tons, by the pound. Overfilled, meaning debris above the rim, is different: the box can't be hauled, a dry-run fee applies and the extra debris has to come out first.
