What size dumpster do you need for a remodel?
A full bathroom gut fits the 10-yard dumpster, which holds 2 tons. A kitchen remodel with cabinets, counters and drywall fits the 20-yard dumpster, which holds 3 tons. A kitchen plus one or two baths, or a remodel with flooring through the house, fits the 20-yard or the 30-yard dumpster.
| Remodel | Typical size | Included tons | Heavy items to count |
|---|---|---|---|
| One bathroom | 10-yard | 2 tons | Tub, tile on mortar bed, toilet |
| Two bathrooms | 15-yard | 2.5 tons | Two layers of tile |
| Kitchen | 20-yard | 3 tons | Stone counters, tile backsplash |
| Kitchen + flooring | 20-yard | 3 tons | Tile floors, plaster walls |
| Whole-house remodel | 30-yard | 4 tons | Plaster and lath, multiple baths |
Typical sizes. Tear-out debris is bulky, so size by space first, then check weight if tile, stone or plaster is coming out.
Which remodel debris pushes the weight up?
Ceramic tile on a mortar bed, stone counters, cast-iron tubs and plaster-and-lath walls push remodel weight up the most. Cabinets, drywall and trim are bulky but light. A bathroom with tile floors and walls can reach the 10-yard dumpster's 2 included tons before the box looks full.
Weight over the included tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket. A 10-yard load at 2.3 tons is 0.3 tons over, which is $22.50. Read how dumpster weight is billed for the full math.
Plan ahead on tile-heavy jobs. Step up one size for space, or keep tile and mortar in a separate small load.

Cabinets, drywall, tile: out the door in one load.
Call now(325) 241-7006How do you load remodel debris so it fits?
Load remodel debris flat and tight: break down cabinets, lay flat pieces like drywall and countertops on the floor of the dumpster, then fill gaps with small debris. Put the heaviest items, such as tubs and tile, low and spread across the box. Keep everything level with the top rim.
Unscrewed cabinet boxes take far less space than whole ones. Start at the far end and work toward the open side. More tips are in how to load a dumpster.
What rules apply to remodeling an older Abilene home?
The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, 40 CFR 745 Subpart E, requires paid renovators to use lead-safe work practices in homes built before 1978. Old floor tile, mastic and pipe wrap may contain asbestos and should be tested before tear-out. Paint cans with liquid paint stay out of the dumpster.
Ask your contractor whether they are RRP-certified for a pre-1978 home. EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Program (checked Oct 21, 2026). This is general information, not legal advice.
Inside Abilene city limits, remodel tear-out counts as construction debris, the one exception the City lists to its own collection rule. See Abilene dumpster rules.
How long should you rent a dumpster for a remodel?
Seven days covers the tear-out phase of most bathroom and kitchen remodels, and 7 days come with every rental. If cabinets or tile arrive late and the job stretches, each extra day costs $25. If the dumpster fills during demolition, a swap brings an empty one as a new rental.
Remodel dumpster questions
Can an old cast-iron tub go in the dumpster?
A cast-iron tub can go in the dumpster. It often weighs a few hundred pounds, so set it low near the front wall and count it toward your included tons.
What do I do with the old refrigerator from the kitchen?
A fridge or freezer can go in for $50 because appliances with Freon need special handling at the landfill. Tell us when you book so it shows on the quote.
Can leftover paint go in with the drywall?
Wet paint can't go in any of our dumpsters. Abilene residents can take leftover paint to the City's Environmental Recycling Center on Oak Street.
Is a 10-yard dumpster too small for a master bath?
A 10-yard dumpster holds 10 cubic yards, about 4 pickup loads, and 2 tons. A large master bath with a tile shower, double vanity and tile floor may need the 15-yard dumpster for space and its 2.5 tons.
