How to Load a Dumpster the Right Way
A well-loaded dumpster holds more, stays under its included tons and leaves on time. These are the loading rules that keep your bill at the quoted price.

How full can you fill a dumpster?
You can fill a dumpster level with the top rim, and no higher. Texas DOT rules don't allow an overloaded dumpster on the road, so debris above the rim can't be hauled. If the dumpster is overfilled at pickup, a $125 dry-run fee applies and the extra debris has to come out first.
Heavy debris has a lower line. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand fill only halfway up the walls, and only in the 10- and 15-yard dumpsters. See concrete and dirt dumpster rules.
Filling up early? Ask about a swap before you pile higher.

The best way to load a dumpster is heavy and flat items first, spread across the floor, then bulky items, then loose debris to fill the gaps. Walk heavy items in through the swing door instead of lifting them over the wall. An even, flat load holds more and rides safely on the truck.

- Heavy, flat, lowSpread weight across the whole floor, not one end.
- Break it downTake apart tables, bed frames and shelving.
- Fill the gapsPack small debris into spaces between big items.
- Keep it levelNothing above the rim at pickup.

Heavy stuff low, nothing above the rim.
Call now(325) 241-7006How do you fit more in a dumpster?
You fit more in a dumpster by removing air. Break down furniture, flatten boxes, cut long boards and branches to the dumpster's width, and lay doors and panels flat. Stand mattresses and sheets of drywall on edge along the walls. Loose piles waste a third of the box or more.
| Item | Do this |
|---|---|
| Couches, recliners | Remove legs and cushions; set the frame upright on its end |
| Tables, bed frames, shelving | Take apart and stack flat |
| Cardboard boxes | Flatten and lay them on top of heavier debris |
| Long boards, branches | Cut to under 8 feet so they lie flat |
| Cabinets | Remove doors; nest boxes inside each other |

How do you keep a dumpster under its weight limit?
You keep a dumpster under its weight limit by watching the heavy material, not the space. Shingles, tile, plaster and concrete use up tons before the box looks full. Keep heavy debris to a smaller share of the load, cover the dumpster before rain, and call if the heavy part grows.
Each size includes 2, 2.5, 3 or 4 tons, and weight over that is $75 per ton by the pound. See how dumpster weight is billed.
Should you cover a dumpster?
Covering a dumpster with a tarp makes sense when rain is coming or when neighbors might add their trash. Wet drywall, carpet and cardboard soak up water that shows up on the scale. A tarp held down with a few boards works. Pull the tarp off before the pickup day.
- Keep the dumpster where you can see it from the house.
- Close the swing door and latch it at the end of each day.
- Remove the tarp before pickup so the driver can check the load.
Loading questions
Can I climb into the dumpster to pack it down?
Walking in through the open swing door to place items is the safest way to pack a roll-off. Avoid climbing over the walls or standing on loose debris.
Can I stack items above the rim if they're light?
Nothing can sit above the top rim, light or heavy. An overfilled load can't be hauled, and a $125 dry-run fee applies at pickup.
What should I do if the dumpster fills before my job is done?
Call for a swap. We haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, billed as a new flat-rate rental.
Do I need to latch the dumpster door before pickup?
Close and latch the swing door before pickup day, with nothing blocking it. The driver needs it shut to load the dumpster on the truck.
